A Facebook spokesperson has confirmed with MarketingLand that vertical videos will get visual support in the Facebook news feed, making them more obvious to users.

Previously, vertical videos were automatically cropped by Facebook into squares when being displayed, but once clicked, that video could be viewed in its full resolution. But now all videos, ads, live broadcasts – all vertically formatted video will appear as vertically formatted videos for both iOS and Android.

The videos will appear in a 2:3 aspect ratio, which won’t take up the whole screen, and will still require a click to see the full resolution of the video. A spokesperson with Facebook said to MarketingLand, “We know that people enjoy more immersive experiences on Facebook, so we’re starting to display a larger portion of each vertical video in News Feed on mobile.”

While I understand the reasoning behind vertical video support from Facebook and other apps, especially as it is the way most video is shot on a phone, but I will always be in support of the “Say No to Vertical Video” crowd. If you need a reason why, here’s a short video:
