According to a recent study by WPEngine, over $267 million have been earned by WordPress plugins and themes since 2010. WPEngine analyzed data from theme and plugin marketplaces to track trends in growth and revenue, ranked the growth and mapped the locations of the top-earning theme and plugin authors. This first chart shows the breakdown between plugins and themes and to see the growth since 2010 is amazing. The average theme generates $36K and the average theme author earns $185K while the average plugin generates $8K and $26K per author.

This next chart displays the most popular theme and plugin developers. It’s no surprise that the top plugin was wpbakery out of Germany, who are the developers of the ever so popular plugin Visual Composer, and the top theme developer is Kriesi out of Austria, who has developed several themes – including Enfold.
