Surface is a series of computing devices, including tablet computers and interactive whiteboards running on Windows operating systems, designed and created by Microsoft. First announced on June 18, 2012 by the then CEO, Steve Ballmer at a Los Angeles event in Milk Studios, Surface was the first major initiative by Microsoft to integrate its Windows operating system with its own hardware, and is the first PC designed and distributed solely by Microsoft. There are two variants of the Surface series of tablets; Surface RT devices which run Windows RT for ARMv7 CPUs, and the Surface Pro devices which run the conventional Windows operating system for IA-32 and x64 CPUs. At the Windows 10 event on the 21st of January 2015, the brand expanded into the interactive whiteboard industry with the announcement of the Microsoft Surface Hub.
